Three things to watch

-

Last week, the WIAA announced none of its tournaments would be held on the University of Wisconsin campus, a group that usually includes football, girls swimming and diving, girls golf and girls tennis.

Girls volleyball state is scheduled to be held at the Resch Center in Ashwaubenon and, although there is still plenty of progress that needs to be made in order for that tournament to happen, the WIAA has at least not lost its venue.

Last season marked only the second time since 2005 only one southeastern Wisconsin team came home with a state title in girls volleyball. Arrowhead was that team but since has graduated Gatorade state player of the year and Notre Dame recruit Aubrey Hamilton and three other college recruits, Elise Schneider, Emily Larson and Josie Salzman.

The cupboard is far from empty, though. Returning all-conference players are setter Jade Stefan, the state leader in assists last year, and middle blocker Monica LaFleur, a Texas-Arlington recruit. Middle blocker Lindsay Krznarich and outside hitter Madi Tolzman also are returning starters.

The most competitive conference race this year could come in the Greater Metro, which has four teams ranked in the Journal Sentinel's initial top 10.

Included in those rankings are defending co-champs Brookfield Central and Divine Savior Holy Angels, as well as Sussex Hamilton and Germantown. And don't count out Menomonee Falls to make some noise as conference play
