Marquette’s Cobeen Hall placed under quarantine.

Marquette University has directed the residents of Cobeen Hall to quarantine for two weeks, beginning 11 p.m. Friday.

The school said it is working to contain a “confirmed cluster of increasing COVID-19 cases among residents of the hall.”

The dormitory is the second at Marquette to be put in quarantine, after administrators placed Schroeder Hall on lockdown beginning Sept. 15. It is set to end on Monday.

Since late August, 165 people have tested positive at Marquette. On Thursday the school reported 15 new cases among students and three among faculty and staff.

Students can only leave the building to attend doctor’s appointments, the school said. The Cobeen dining hall will be open for carryout to Cobeen residents only. All residents of the hall will be tested in the coming week if they were not tested this week. Quarantined students will attend classes virtually.

Students were encouraged not move out and return home to their families because they risk spreading the coronavirus, administrators said, however many students could be seen moving out of the dorms on Saturday.

When Schroeder Hall went on lockdown earlier in September, freshman Alexandra Quintana and her friends wondered “What if we’re next?”

“At that moment I told them I was going to stay at my dorm because I couldn’t concentrate (at home),” Quintana said. “But now that I’m experiencing everything, I knew I wanted to go home.”

Quintana moved out of Cobeen Hall Saturday morning after spending the night at a friend’s house off campus.

“I’m from Milwaukee, so I live 10 minutes away from Marquette, so it’s not that bad if I wanted to go home,” Quintana said.

Quintana has six family members living at home, including herself, younger siblings and her niece.

Having spent the first few weeks of school being careful and minimizing the number of people she was around, Quintana said she feels safe about going back home and not endangering her family, but she isn’t taking any chances.

Quintana said she’ll get tested at the end of her 14-day quarantine and she hopes to move back to Marquette once the test results come back negative.
