UWM pauses basketball

-

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected UW-Milwaukee's men's basketball team less than a week before its season was scheduled to begin.

The school announced Saturday it was pausing all team activities after being informed of a positive COVID-19 test in its Tier 1 group.

As a result, the MKE Classic Tournament that UWM was set to host next weekend at the Klotsche Center has been canceled. The Panthers were scheduled to play North Dakota State on Nov. 27 and Southern Mississippi on Nov. 29.

UWM's next scheduled game is at Kansas State on Dec. 8. It is also slated to play at Western Michigan on Dec. 12 before opening Horizon League play at UW-Green Bay on Dec. 19.

The program was notified of the positive result as part of regular surveillance testing, which is done three times per week for Tier 1 personnel in accordance with NCAA protocols. Tier 1 members include student-athletes, coaches, team managers and support staff.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

The Marquette men's basketball team received a boost to its roster Saturday night.

Junior guard Jose Perez, a transfer from Gardner-Webb, was granted a waiver by the NCAA to play immediately.

The 6-foot-5 Perez averaged 15.1 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists over two seasons for the Runnin' Bulldogs. He sat out the final 10 games last season for personal reasons.

When Perez decided to transfer, he had over 30 high-major coaches reach out. He committed to MU in May. He will be able to play three seasons after the NCAA announced eligibility relief for wintersport athletes due to the coronavirus.

Perez will bolster a backcourt that includes sophomore D.J. Carton, a transfer from Ohio State who also received a waiver to play immediately, and senior Koby McEwen.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

The game between No. 4 Clemson and Florida State was postponed hours before kickoff Saturday when medical personnel from both schools could not agree it was safe to play.

The Tigers learned a day earlier one of their players tested positive for COVID-19, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press.

The Atlantic Coast Conference announced the postponement, although it did not detail whether the game at Florida State was called off because of coronavirus issues.

The person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity said the postponement stemmed from a positive test Clemson received Friday after traveling to Tallahassee. That unidentified player had tested negative on campus this week despite displaying symptoms.

The second-ranked Kim shot a 6-under 64, birdieing Nos. 14-17, to get to 14-under 196 at Pelican Golf Club. McDonald shot 68. She had the hole-in-one on the par-3 12th and birdied the par-5 14th to get close to Kim.
