Todd wins unanimous council approval to lead the FPC
The Milwaukee Common Council on Tuesday unanimously approved Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett’s nomination of Leon Todd to be executive director of the Fire and Police Commission.
On Monday, he won unanimous approval of the Public Safety and Health Committee.
Todd, who has worked as an assistant state public defender since 2014, told the committee that one of his top priorities would be to fill vacancies at the FPC.
Todd will succeed Griselda Aldrete, who left in October after a tumultuous tenure. She was the third executive director since 2018.
His father, also Leon Todd, was a Milwaukee School Board member and one of 10 candidates for Milwaukee mayor in 2004, when Barrett won his first term.
Meanwhile, the nomination of
Amanda Avalos to the commission did not come before the council Tuesday, despite also having been recommended for approval in committee.
Late Monday, council members were alerted her nomination could not move forward because a background investigation was not completed by the Milwaukee County Sheriff ’s Office as required by city ordinance. It was completed by an outside firm.
“We were disappointed to learn of this procedural breakdown, as were many of our colleagues, and we look forward to resuming Ms. Avalos’ confirmation process when it is appropriate to do so,” Common Council President Cavalier Johnson and Public Safety and Health Committee Chair Ald. Marina Dimitrijevic said in a statement.
