Martin Luther King Essay

SECOND PLACE (9TH & 10TH GRADES) Rufus King, 9th Grade

- BY Destiny Dokes

Have you ever stopped to think about how Black Historians kept moving forward? Or how they shaped our mindsets for us to keep moving forward in today’s life? Martin Luther King, Jr. kept moving forward. He showed the prime example of it. When Dr. King’s grandmother died he attempted to commit suicide by jumping from a second story window at the age of 12. He organized multiple events to guide our people to success, even if that meant hard times would come. From Dr. King’s I have a dream speech in 1963 to his assassination in 1968 his life was like a living hell.

Dr. King was harassed by the government, they felt that Dr. King was too powerful, they knew he could change the nation. When Martin Luther King, Jr. talked about corruption in the government, the media turned on him. He became a target of the FBI. The government wiretapped him and more. Two days after Dr. King gave his I Have A Dream speech a FBI domestic intelligence chief by the name of William Sullivan stated ¨We must mark him now. If we have not done so before, as the most dangerous Negro of the future of this nation from standpoint of communication, the Negro and national security.¨ This was just the beginning. Like Dr. King said ¨Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that¨. We are that light and we will keep moving forward.

Dr. King’s message of moving forward has never stopped moving. Frank Sensebaugh is an amazing, outspoken activist committed to bringing our community together as one. Committed to giving us the clarity we need, the confidence of being able to walk outside of our homes, or even sleep without worrying about being killed. As an up and coming activist I know that he has faced a lot of challenges. For example, I know of one event that made a tremendous effect on our community. Frank decided to do a March from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Washington D.C to show how he’s ready to change the way people address, and undermine our Black community.

Dr. King and Mr. Sensabaugh are alike in so many ways. They lead by example for our young generation. Dr. King showed determination for change just like how Frank Nitty does now. Frank Nitty marched for 24 days straight just like how Dr. King marched from Selma to Montgomery Alabama for everyone to see that violence is not important, that we just want equality, change , love. These men together show people then and now what it means to keep moving forward.

Moving forward I, Destiny Dokes, will be the future. From graduating 8th grade virtually, to Freshman year virtually. From the killings of innocent people, to the Black lives Matter protest, Gang Violence. To the future generations with hopes that there is no reason to move forward anymore because the success of reaching equality will finally be achieved. Until then we can NOT stop moving!
