Mishicot claims Division 4 championship
The Mishicot girls basketball team finished the job.
A year ago the Indians lost in the state semifinals of the WIAA state girls basketball tournament before the event cancelled due to COVID-19. This year the team wouldn't be denied as it fought off a Mineral Point comeback to score a 7066 victory in the Division 4 championship game at the La Crosse Center in La Crosse.
Forward Kylie Schmidt finished with 27 points, 13 rebounds and four assists for Mishicot. She also cleaned up at the free throw line where she hit 13 of 18 attempts, including a free throw with 3 seconds left that sealed the win.
That point capped a wild finish in which Mishicot forced two turnovers in the final minute to help seal the win, getting a steal after it missed a free throw and stealing a Mineral Point entry pass into the post when the Pointers could have tied the game.
The Pointers (17-6) was led by Ella Chambers, who finished with 20 points on 8-for-14 shooting with four rebounds. Kennedy Wenger added 15 points and made seven of 14 shots.
Semifinals
Mishicot 55, Fall Creek 30: Both teams started slow offensively, but Mishicot turned up its defense and put together a 12-0 run to take a 24-12 lead at the half. Four players scored for the Indians in that span.
Mineral Pont 66, Bangor 30: The Pointers advanced to their second championship game in school history with a record-setting performance from three-point range. They hit 13 threes, one more than the previous record set by La Crosse Aquinas last year.
Division 3
La Crosse Aquinas 69, Westfield 45: It was record-setting day for junior forward Jacy Weisbrod and the Blugolds at Menomonee Nation Arena in Oshkosh.
Weisbrod set a single-game record for three-pointers as she hit seven of nine beyond the arc and scored 31 points.
The victory sent Aquinas (22-0) to the final for the fourth straight year. Though there were no championships played last year, the Blugolds won their semifinal before the remainder of the tournament was cancelled.
Lake Mills 70, Howards Grove 60: Lake Mills went on an 11-0 run during the second half, a run that sparked the L-Cats into the state final.
Senior Jade Pitta led Lake Mills (24-2) with 19 points.
