St. Catherine’s returns to state with Division 3 victory Division 3
Almost a year later Racine St. Catherine's finally punched its ticket to the state tournament.
The Angels were one of the boys basketball teams still alive last season when the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association canceled the remainder of the winter sports season after the sectional semifinals due to COVID-19.
Saturday, they defeated Milwaukee Academy of Science, 84-73, in a Division 3 sectional final at Shoreland Lutheran to return to state for the first time since 2011.
Senior guard/forward Jameer Barker scored a career-high 28 points on 9-for-16 shooting for St. Catherine's. He also tied for the team high in rebounds (seven).
The Angels (26-1) also got 20 points, six rebounds and six assists from senior guard Tyrese Hunter and 15 points, seven boards and four assists from senior guard Kamari McGee.
MAS, which lost to St. Catherine's by 35 points Dec. 15, trailed by just two points at the half. Senior guard Donald McHenry led the Novas with 30 points and the team finished the season 10-6.
In other sectional finals involving area teams: during the regular season at home but lost, 78-46, on the road.
Division 2
Pewaukee defeated Wisconsin Lutheran, 76-63, at home to reach state for the first time since 2001. The key point was a 12-0 run during the final 3 12 ⁄ minutes of the first half that gave the Pirates a 40-21 lead. Senior guard AJ HIntz hit 5 of 6 shots and scored 19 points for Pewaukee. Josh Terrian, a junior guard, added 16 points on 4-for-9 shooting.
Lake Country Lutheran beat St. John's Northwestern Academies, 9468, at home to earn its first berth in the state tournament. Junior guard Luke Haertle led the Lightning with 27 points, six rebounds and six assists. Senior Gavin Theis added 21 points on 5-for-8 shooting from three-point range, while junior forward Ben Lubbers posted 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Division 4
The Prairie School earned its first state berth with an 82-76 win over Cuba City. Senior Kody Krekling hit 4 three-pointers and scored a seasonhigh 25 points for the Hawks.
