City crews to pick up large items from curb for free
City workers will pick up Milwaukee residents’ unwanted furniture and yard debris for free during specific weeks in the next month.
The Department of Public Works has split up the city into six zones. Starting Monday and running through the week of May 17, crews will pick up large items in a different zone each week.
Those who live in residences with up to four units should place the items at their usual garbage collection spot — the curb or the alley line — before 7 a.m. on the day garbage is usually collected.
Residents should make sure the items are not placed in the street.
Accepted items include unwanted furniture, mattresses, household items and garden or yard debris in brown paper yard waste bags.
Crews will not take the following items: appliances, tires, TVs and other electronics, construction debris, paint and paint thinner, motor oil and other hazardous waste.
For those items, the department directed residents to their Drop Off Centers at 3879 W. Lincoln Avenue and 6660 N. Industrial Road or the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District’s household hazardous waste program.
Each housing unit can set out up to six cubic yards of garbage. One cubic yard is about the size of a recliner chair.
To find their zone, residents can call 414-286-CITY or go to Milwaukee.gov/cleanandgreen and enter their address into a search engine. A full-sized map is also available there.
