Sendik’s to open new grocery store in Oconomowoc

- Joe Taschler

Sendik’s Food Markets, the Milwaukee-based grocery chain, said Tuesday it plans to open a store this fall in western Waukesha County.

The store is planned for 1408 Summit Avenue in Oconomowoc in the Olympia Fields development, according to a statement from Sendik’s.

Olympia Fields is a mixed-use development at the site that was once home to the Olympia Hotel and Resort.

This will be Sendik’s 18th store in the Milwaukee metro area.

The location is about a mile north of the I-94/Highway 67 interchange. The site was home to a Kmart store.

“The new Sendik’s Food Market will bring to life the former Kmart building that will be completely remodeled and renovated as part of the Olympia Fields development,” said Oconomowoc Mayor Robert Magnus, in a statement. “Sendik’s offers something totally unique for our citizens and brings the quality that we were hoping for in the development.”

Oconomowoc is a growing suburb of just over 18,000 in western Waukesha County. The community has seen an influx of retail and residential development during the past decade. Its population grew by nearly 2,500 -- or about 15% -- between 2010 and 2020, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Sendik’s mostly operates full-service grocery stores but also operates a number of smaller footprint, quick serve stores throughout metro Milwaukee.

The Oconomowoc location will be a 60,000 square-foot, full-service store.

“This opening fits squarely with our growth plans of picking highly desirable, highly visible locations in growing communities,” Ted Balistreri, one of the family co-owners of Sendik’s, said in a statement.

Sendik’s is among the first named projects at Olympia Fields.

The project is being developed by Wangard Partners.

In October, Wangard Partners held a groundbreaking ceremony for The Locklyn at Olympia Fields, a new luxury apartment development that will bring 178 units to the development. The first apartment building is expected to be completed by June 1.
