COVID cases dip, as do hospitaliz­ations

COVID-19 cases and hospitaliz­ations in Wisconsin are continuing to fall.

On Friday, the Wisconsin Hospital Associatio­n reported that there were 2,021 COVID patients. By Saturday, that number had dropped to 1,933. On Monday, there were 1,930. Hospitaliz­ations peaked during this surge at 2,278 on Jan. 12.

The seven-day average of new COVID cases has been on the decline since peaking at 18,892 on Wednesday, according to data from DHS. On Sunday, the seven-day average was 11,127 cases per day.

The number of new, confirmed COVID cases started falling after Wednesday, when it hit 15,644. There were 11,743 reported Thursday, 10,085 reported Friday, 7,036 reported Saturday and 5,042 reported on Sunday.

Variant case sequencing

State and private labs regularly do further tests on a portion of positive COVID-19 samples to find the prevalence of different variants of the virus. The numbers are just a fraction of the total number of variant cases.

Omicron variant was identified in 100% of tests sequenced during the week starting Jan. 10.
