Basketball

-

sharing the high school stage with a brother or sister and making big things happen.

Here are a few.

The Dieners of Cedarburg

There might not be a more successful extended basketball family in the state. Brothers Tom (Milwaukee Vincent, Milwaukee Hamilton, Cedarburg) and Dick (Fond du Lac) are in the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Travis (Marquette) and Drake (De Paul), among others, went on to play major college ball.

At Cedarburg, Tom’s children, Clare, a senior guard who will play at Division II Rockhurst (Missouri), and John, a 2018 graduate who gave up the game in college to pursue a career in medicine, sit atop the school’s all-time scoring charts. Clare leads the Bulldogs in scoring (18 ppg), is second in rebounding (4.9 ppg) and entered play Thursday with a chance to help the Bulldogs win the North Shore title.

John is one of 46 boys in state history to score 2,000 points. In 2017 he authored one of the best single-game performances in state history, 46 points that lifted the Bulldogs to the state championship game.

Combined they’ve scored 3,743 points and counting, a number very few sibling pairs can match.

Brookfield Central senior Andrew Rohde is the youngest of four siblings. His sister Lydia, a 2014 grad, went on to play at Northwestern.

Tokoto, Trimble of Menomonee Falls

Menomonee Falls senior Seth Trimble isn’t the only high-flyer in the family. Big brother J.P. Tokoto charted a similar path at the school from 2009-2012 when he helped Falls win the Greater Metro title in 2010 and reach the sectional final. He went on to play at North Carolina.

Trimble, a 6-foot-3 guard, also will play for the Tar Heels. He recently passed J.P. as Falls’ all-time leading scorer and might end up with bragging rights when it comes to the tournament. The Phoenix clinched the school’s first conference title since 2010 on Tuesday and look to be a tough out in the playoffs.

Trimble leads the team in scoring (26.9 ppg), rebounds (7.3 rpg) and assists (4.5 apg) and is a serious contender for the Mr. Basketball award given each year to the state’s top senior.

The Rohdes of Brookfield Central

This family has been getting buckets at Brookfield Central for more than a decade.

Nate, a 2012 grad, was a role player who averaged 6.1 point per game as a senior. Lydia (2014) was an all-state player who went to play at Northwestern and serve as a captain as a junior and senior. Sam (2017) was an all-Greater Metro player who helped the Lancers win the league title and reach the state tournament as a senior.

Andrew, a 6-7 senior who signed with St. Thomas (Minnesota), is shaping up to be the best of the bunch. He leads the Lancers in scoring (29.4 ppg), rebounding (7.8 rpg) and assists (6.0) and is another serious contender for Mr. Basketball.

The Harpers of Arrowhead

Alaina Harper, a 6-3 senior forward, is the leading scorer for a Warhawks squad that could very well make it to the state tournament.

Her big sister, Caitlyn, blazed that trail four years ago when she was the leading scorer for a team that reached the Division 1 semifinals before falling to eventual champion Appleton North. Today she a redshirt sophomore at California Baptist, who she is averaging a team-high 18.5 points for an 18-5 team. She’ll be joined by Alaina, a Grand Canyon recruit, in the Western Athletic Conference next season.

Maybe Alaina will follow her big sister’s trail to state. Barring a major upset, Arrowhead will finish second in the Classic 8 and is a No. 2 seed in its Division 1 sectional.

The Haertles of Lake Country Lutheran

This marks the sixth straight season that either Luke, a senior guard, and Bryce, a 2019 graduate, has led the Lightning in scoring.

Bryce, a 6-1 guard, was a 1,000-point scorer who led the team with a 20.8 scoring average as a senior. Right behind him was Luke, who averaged 16.8 points and a team-high 8.5 rebounds per game. It was a highly productive freshman season for a player who as a senior would reach 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds and should earn allstate distinction for the third straight year.

Even better, the Lightning is on the short list of contenders for the state title in Division 3 after finishing as the runner-up last year.

Talent runs in the family. Their father, Eric, was Brookfield East’s all-time leading scorer until last year, a run of 34 years.

The Clareys of Brookfield Academy

More than 6,100 points. That is how much scoring Sean, Ryan, Aidan and Peytan Clarey have given the Knights over the years.

Peytan, a senior guard, leads the team in scoring (16.7). This marks the fifth straight season and the 11th time in 12 years one of the boys has been the team’s leading scorer. Peytan, who also led the team in rebounds (8.6 rpg) and assists (3.7) has been at the heart of a resurgent campaign for the Knights, who are 16-5 after going 2-17 last season.

The Terrians of Pewaukee

Could there be two state championships at the Terrian house this winter? Pewaukee’s boys and girls teams have the talent to bring home championship and critical to that potential are a trio of Terrians.

Josh, who was also instrumental in the Pirates’ Division 2 championship last season, is a 6-4 guard who does a little of everything. He averaged 11.9 points, 6.9 rebounds and a team-high five assists for the area’s top-ranked team.

Twin sisters Anna (16.5 ppg) and Amy (8.3 ppg) are talented freshmen whose emergence allowed the girls team to overcome some key losses to graduation and remain a state title contender.

The Brumbys of Racine Case

Thanks to the Brumby brothers, boys basketball is a family affair at Case.

Terryon a 6-1 senior guard, has been one of the team’s top players for the past two seasons. He recently scored his 1,000th point and leads the team in scoring (18.1 ppg) and assists (4.8 apg). Younger brother Termarion, a 6-1 sophomore, is showing similar promise, averaging 8.8 points, 6.3 rebounds and 28 assists in his first season of varsity ball.

Together they’ve helped Case talk a one-game lead in the Southeast Conference race.
