Illness forces Dolphins to scrap practice
The Miami Dolphins canceled their joint practice Thursday with the Philadelphia Eagles after a stomach bug sidelined “more than a couple” of players, coach Mike McDaniel said.
“That was a unique curveball early this morning,” McDaniel said. “We don’t really know totally where it was coming from and are just trying to be overly cautious.”
A few members of the Dolphins staff have been affected and it appears to be contagious, he said.
Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said no one on the team had exhibited any stomach bug symptoms. The Eagles held their own practice Thursday.
The preseason between the teams Saturday night at Miami’s Hard Rock
Stadium was still on.
Tretter retires: Former Green Bay Packers and Cleveland Browns center JC Tretter announced his retirement after eight seasons in the NFL.
Tretter, who will continue to serve as president of the NFL Players Association, only missed one game for Cleveland over the past five seasons despite battling injuries. The Browns released the 31-year-old Tretter in March – shortly after he was elected to a second-term – in a salary-cap move that saved $8.25 million.
Green Bay drafted Tretter in the fourth round in 2013 from Cornell and he spent three seasons with the Packers.
Cowboys Pro Bowl tackle injured: Dallas Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith is expected to return at some point this season after sustaining a torn left hamstring that also injured the knee, team owner and general manager Jerry Jones said.
The 31-year-old eight-time Pro Bowl selection was injured in practice Wednesday night, reportedly suffering a torn hamstring with a knee fracture that resulted from the tendon pulling away from the bone.
Brissett to start: Veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett will finally make his delayed debut for the Cleveland Browns.
Set to fill in as Cleveland’s starter while Deshaun Watson serves his upcoming 11-game NFL suspension, Brissett will start Saturday night’s exhibition finale against the Chicago Bears.
Coach Kevin Stefanski said he didn’t know exactly how long Brissett and Cleveland’s other starters would be on the field.
