Division II All-American cornerback commits to UW
MADISON – Wisconsin’s defensive staff has been working to bolster the team’s cornerback depth since before spring ball ended on April 27.
The Badgers finally secured an oral commitment Tuesday night.
Nyzier Fourqurean, who played two seasons at Division II Grand Valley State in Michigan, announced he plans to transfer to UW.
That announcement came a week after it was reported he planned to transfer to Vanderbilt.
Matt Mitchell, UW’s outside linebackers/special teams coach, no doubt played a role in Fourqurean’s recruitment. Mitchell came to UW after serving as Grand Valley State’s head coach from 2010 through last season.
Fourqurean, 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds, played in 24 games for Mitchell.
He recorded 13 tackles and one pass broken up as a freshman in 2021. He recorded 37 tackles last season, tied for the No. 6 mark on the team, and led the team in interceptions (four) and passes broken up (14).
Fourqurean was a first-team AllAmerican last season according to The Associated Press. Grand Valley State advanced to the quarterfinals of the national playoffs and finished 12-1 overall.
UW’s top three cornerbacks throughout spring ball were senior Alexander Smith and redshirt sophomore Ricardo Hallman on the outside and senior Jason Maitre, a transfer from Boston College, in the slot.
All three have started games in college.
The No. 2 unit featured freshmen Jonas Duclona and Jace Arnold and redshirt junior Amaun Williams, a walk-on from Milwaukee Riverside.
Redshirt freshmen Avyonne Jones and A’Khoury Lyde announced their plans to transfer. Fellow cornerback Al Ashford, who did not participate in spring practice, announced earlier Tuesday he is transferring to Utah State.
