Milwaukee shouldn’t toy with losing another sports franchise

-

I read with sadness and disappointment the recent article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel about the difficulty of the Brewers coming up with funding for maintenance and improvements to American Family Field (“Will the Brewers hit the road?” Aug. 13).

My wife and I grew up and lived in the Milwaukee area for many years. I remember growing up with the Milwaukee Braves in the early ‘60s and just how sad it was when they left town.

There was a void for many years that I really believe affected the economy and image of Milwaukee during that time until Bud Selig brought baseball and the Brewers back to Milwaukee.

Living in California now, I really don’t understand how people, especially the state politicians, cannot realize what a gem they have in the Brewers. The intangible fact is that the Brewers bring people and their money here from all over the country. It is a state team, just like the Packers.

San Diego lost their football team because of the irresponsible thinking of their local politicians.

The same thing can happen in Milwaukee very easily.

It’s funny how the Bucks made things work with the state and local politicians financing the Fiserv Forum. Why can’t the same thing happen with the Brewers? I am also confused as to why American Family, who has naming rights to the stadium, is never mentioned toward helping out with this problem.

In any case, this problem needs to be fixed and fixed fast or you will lose this wonderful pastime and a big part of the Milwaukee legacy.
