Nancy Baldwin Torphy

-

Passed away peacefully on Monday, October 30, 2023, at the age of 78 years. Preceded in death by her parents Richard Baldwin and Helen Thrasher Baldwin, and former husband David N. Torphy. Loving mother of Aaron (Andrea) Torphy and Mark Torphy. Proud grandmother of Isabella, Brandon, Christian, and Brooklyn. Beloved sister of Debbie (the late Fred Olsen) Baldwin.

Nancy grew up in Chicago, Illinois. She was her high school valedictorian and went on to attend the University of Illinois before moving to Milwaukee in 1968. She earned her Master’s Degree in Library Science and had a long and distinguished career working as a librarian manager for the City of Milwaukee. Her skills as a librarian were put to good use in her pursuit of her family’s genealogy. Many volumes of her family history are meticulously documented and preserved for generations to come. Nancy also loved her book clubs and was a fountain of knowledge about all things historical. Her knowledge of history and love of architecture led her to become a custodian for “Doors Open – Historic Milwaukee” throughout her retirement.

She had many wonderful friends with whom she loved to play bridge, trivial pursuit, and all manner of fun games. The Wonderful Bridge Club (WBC) was an endless source of joy and laughter for her. The WBC, more than just bridge, meant family camping trips, many more recent visits to Door County, and the love of beautiful friends.

More than anything she was a loving and devoted mother to Aaron and Mark, and the world’s greatest grandmother. Nancy passed peacefully, in her favorite chair, doing what she loved… knitting for friends and family. She is loved and dearly missed, but will live on in our memories and hearts forever.

A memorial service celebrating Nancy’s life will be held in the Spring of 2024.
