Younger cousin of Peralta signs international deal with Brewers

- Curt Hogg TV: Radio:

The Milwaukee Brewers have a team of more than 20 international scouts who are responsible for identifying and evaluating young talent outside of the country.

They have an all-star pitcher who was just able to help out in that department, too.

As the international free agent signing period opened Monday, one of the 35 prospects the Brewers signed to a contract was Christopher Peralta, a right-handed pitcher out of the Dominican Republic and cousin of Brewers starter Freddy Peralta.

"Freddy certainly directed our attention to the player," Brewers director of international scouting James Armstrong said.

Of course, there's no telling what kind of player Peralta, who doesn't turn 17 until May and is one of the youngest players the Brewers signed Monday, ends up becoming. But at first glance, there are some scouting trait similarities between the relatives.

"We didn't have the fortune of signing Freddy as an amateur," Armstrong said. "We acquired him via trade, but he was in our organization early and I remember amateur Freddy. When he came over in the trade with Seattle, there are similarities (with Christopher).

"He makes up for his height with plus on-mound athleticism and gets the above-average extension that makes Freddy's fastball tick up. He's got a natural feel for the high-spin breaker as well. That's what we're betting on, is a similarity there. Of course, Christopher is his own player, but he's got a great one to look up to in Freddy."

Christopher, like Freddy, is from the northern part of the Dominican Republic. He was signed by area scout José Gómez.
