Police search school after third bomb threat within one week

- Rory Linnane

Police searched Milwaukee French Immersion School for the third time in a week after receiving another bomb threat against the school early on Wednesday, the Milwaukee Police Department confirmed.

After school staff received a bomb threat early Wednesday, police said they checked the exterior of the school at about 2:30 a.m. and found that it “did not appear to be broken into,” according to an email from the department. Police stayed at the school until about 10 a.m., the department said.

According to an email the school’s principal sent to parents, which parents shared with the Journal Sentinel, school continued Wednesday with additional safety staff present. The email said threats had been shared online.

“Every situation that could impact safety is taken seriously,” the principal, Jenna Harer, said in the email. “At this time, none of the information shared has been deemed credible.”

On Friday, April 5, the school closed all day after a bomb threat that morning. That threat also included two other Milwaukee Public Schools campuses, Groppi High School and Hi-Mount Community School. Police said they found nothing in their search of all three schools, which reopened Monday.

Police searched French Immersion School again Tuesday after an additional bomb threat to the school at at 5:42 a.m. They again found nothing. School was allowed to continue.

Milwaukee police said they are continuing to investigate the incidents and have not identified suspects. Citing the ongoing investigation, police declined to answer questions about how the threats were delivered, what was said or whether they appeared to be swatting attempts.

Swatting attempts, which are false threats intended to trigger police responses, have become more widespread against schools in recent years.
