EDITOR’S LETTER

- Carole Nicksin carole@milwaukeemag.com @CaroleNicksin

Night lights.

IN THE DEAD OF WINTER, I SOMETIMES find it difficult to motivate myself up off the couch in the evening, unless it’s for a quick trip to the Metro Market to restock the fridge with Spotted Cow. It’s too cold, it’s too dark, and I have so much catching up to do on Netflix, I reason.

But another part of me has different ideas. She subscribes to the philosophy put forth in the lyrics of “Cabaret,” nagging me with that age-old question, what good is sitting alone in your room?

I have to say, I think it’s healthy to defy inertia and explore the night, especially at this time of year when just about everyone has had it with winter. Getting out, meeting new people, and seeing a band or a comedian can go a long way toward making life feel fresh again. So with that in mind, we put together the “MKE After Dark” feature, which starts on page 49. I think you might be a bit astounded by the number and variety of things there are to do in this city. Among the eclectic assortment of entertainment and activities our writers uncovered: tavern meet-ups where you can have a beer and talk about Jesus, group crafting events at Pin-It Live, evenings that intertwine Shakespeare with drinking games, and an indie movie series at UWM. Whatever type of nourishment your soul seeks, I think we’ve found something to satisfy it.

And speaking of nourishment, if you’re feeling in the mood for a fish fry, turn to page 79. You’ll find Ann Christenson’s reviews of some of the most popular fries in town, plus reader recommendations and lots more. I can’t wait to try a few of the church-sponsored fries that only happen during Lent.

This being February, it’s likely there is still plenty of snow shoveling to come. You might find yourself wondering what is the best outfit to wear for this endeavor. Wonder no more. Senior Editor Matt Hrodey models the latest and greatest in cold-weather wear on page 28. Catch him now before the talent scouts hijack him to Paris to work the runways. Seriously, Matt was a very good sport about this, his first (but hopefully not his last!) modeling gig. It just goes to show that when you’re part of the MilMag staff, you never know exactly what type of stunt you’ll be pulled into.

Until next time, see you on the dance floor.
