Health and Vision

When illness strikes, having a responsive and knowledgeable doctor to turn to is crucial. After all, you’re relying on their expertise and advice to chart a course back to good health. Clearly, selecting the right physician is an important decision. That’s why so many readers rely on our biannual roundup of the leading doctors in our area (page 47). This guide winnows down the field and provides an edited list of highly qualified physicians for you to choose from. It’s a service that we are pleased to provide.

Pharmacists can also play a role in supporting your health. In “Throwbacks,” which begins on page 66, writer Kenya C. Evans introduces us to the late pharmacist Dr. Lester Carter, who served the North Side for close to 50 years. Dr. Carter’s expertise went beyond filling prescriptions; he was knowledgeable in herbal remedies and would blend potions specially formulated to address his patients’ ailments. The article profiles a number of locally owned and operated pharmacies that continue to bring a human touch to the services they provide. They are worth seeking out.

In its two decades of existence, the Milwaukee Art Museum’s pavilion designed by Santiago Calatrava has become a symbol of the city. In “A Vision Realized” (page 72), Calatrava reflects on the project and the time he spent in Milwaukee. Even in 2022, the elegant design still seems audacious. It’s as much art as architecture, and its existence has elevated the city’s image. This was Calatrava’s first project in the United States, and it was a costly gamble. Thankfully, we had people with the resources and the creative spirit to bring the project to fruition. Hats off to Betty and Harry Quadracci, for whom the pavilion is named, and to Donna and Donald Baumgartner, who were also major funders and supporters of the project. And a big thanks to all the other people who helped make the building a reality. The pavilion lets the world know that Milwaukee is a city that values art, beauty and creative thinking.

Taking the themes of these stories into account, I wish you a healthy and visionary month. Take good care of yourself, and keep imagining a brilliant future – for yourself, your family and your community.
