A Spring Spectrum
Did you happen to notice the S-word on the cover? Yes, that one: Spring! True, the vernal equinox doesn’t arrive until mid-March, but the new season of culture is in full swing. And with it comes a surge of energy and inspiration that I think we could all use right about now.
Our culture editor, Alli Watters, pulled together an awesome overview of the highlights, starting on page 42. One of my top picks is Skylight Music Theatre’s production of Evita, which was postponed due to the pandemic and will finally have its run this month. Also of interest is “Degenerate!,” an exhibition at The Jewish Museum Milwaukee showcasing artwork that was condemned by Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime.
Milwaukee seems to have an abundance of people and organizations dedicated to fixing what is broken in our city and improving the status quo. Each year, we pay tribute to a select few whose work we admire and respect by acknowledging them with a Unity Award (page 52). Please join us on March 8, when we will convene these outstanding Milwaukeeans for a panel discussion. For more information, go to milwaukeemag.com/unity.
It’s not often that we run an investigative feature in our magazine, but when writer Elly Fishman brought the story of what’s happening at Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s hospital on the East Side (“Descension,” page 60) to our attention, we gave it the green light. The issues raised by doctors and others close to the situation are disturbing, and we felt it was important to share this information with our readers.
As you can see, the stories in this issue run the gamut, from things to do to important issues that potentially impact our lives and health. At our best, that’s what Milwaukee Magazine provides – information that not only enhances your life in this city of ours, but also improves your ability to navigate it. So, while we wait for spring to arrive, I hope that you find some light on these pages.
