ModelAirplaneNews.com Making Scale Engine Cowls

-

We posted a great how-to article showing an easy way to make scale engine cowls. Using a combination of easy-to-shape foam and balsa, this technique shows how to custom-make the engine cowling right on your model. It is formed over the engine, which is also installed so that you get a perfect fit. Although this article shows a Staudacher GS300 built from Model Airplane News plans, the technique can be used for any type of model airplane. All the materials and supplies are readily available at any hobby shop.

Tom Wheeling: Nice. It is sort of like making a master plug, and instead of the effort of making a mold and laying up a fiberglass part, you simply cut out the middleman. I will give it a try.

Michael Simmons: I used to make production molds and parts for use in commercials and other TV spots. But when we had a rush job, we did this exactly. One-offs get the job done quickly and will last a surprisingly long time.

Gregory James: Perfect timing. I just bought an old model biplane, and I have not had any luck finding a new engine cowling. I’ll just make it myself, now that I know how. Thanks for a great workshop tip.

Bill Conrad: Many years ago, I used the same sort of technique to make a touring fairing for my vintage motorcycles. Formed using fiberglass, resin, with a little wood thrown in here and there for the attachment points works wonders.
