SCALE HUBCAPS

- George McGreggor, Greenville, South Carolina

With many civilian aircraft, the wheels and axle are protected with hubcaps. Often crowned, these scale accessories are hard to reproduce. I found that the bottoms of many soda and beer cans have a curved shape, and the aluminum that the cans are made of is pretty easy to cut. Cut off about an inch from the can with a pair of shop scissors, then measure and mark the size hubcap you need using a drawing compass. Carefully cut it to shape, and sand the edges smooth. You can use any of the Goop-type adhesives to stick the hubcaps in place.
