Alyson Pitman Giles plans to step down as president and CEO of Catholic Medical Center, Manchester, N.H.

Dr. Joe Pepe, the hospital’s CMO, will act as interim CEO during the recruitment and selection of a new leader, according to a hospital statement.

Giles, 58, will stay with Catholic Medical Center as a “transition consultant” until June 30 and will be involved with the selection of a new president and CEO, according to the hospital. “It’s a great time to turn the page and start the next chapter,” Giles said in the statement. “I look forward to helping and identifying an individual who will embrace our mission, Catholic identity and love of our CMC family.”

Giles became the hospital’s CEO in 1998 when a merger with Elliot Hospital, also in Manchester, dissolved. Catholic Medical Center later proposed an affiliation with Dartmouth Hitchcock Health, Lebanon, N.H., which drew objections from the state attorney general in 2010 and was withdrawn by the parties last April.

Earlier this month, the American College of Healthcare Executives announced Giles as one of two 2012 recipients of its Gold Medal Award. She served as the organization’s board chair-elect, chairman and immediate past chairman from 2006 to 2009. Giles was named one of Modern Healthcare’s Top 25 Women in Healthcare in 2007.
