Minimum wage hike has been ‘positive and sustainable change’ at UW Health
Regarding the article “Health systems look to boost employee retention through minimum wage hikes” (Jan. 26, p. 14), news about systems moving to a $15 hourly wage for the lowest rate of pay is welcome.
In 2016, the UW Health system in Madison, Wis., adopted a $15 minimum. Before making that decision, we looked at research on pay rates that give individuals and families an opportunity to reach financial independence, rely less on public assistance and have food and housing security. We believe that by providing appropriate compensation, our employees are better-positioned to provide the excellent patient care and consistent work that makes us a strong healthcare organization.
It has been a positive and sustainable change for us. We are pleased to see other systems adopting this approach.
