Mistakes to Avoid

Modern Pioneer - - [springs Eternal] -

Making a rain-barrel water catchment and irrigation system is easy, but there are some things you must avoid.

Square barrels, because the pressure of 50-plus gallons of water can cause leaks at the corners

Spigots not sized for garden hoses

Locations lower than your garden that won’t allow gravity to feed the water where you need it

Low-priced kits, which often have cheap components that can fail shortly after installation, or might not work with the other components.

Barrels too small for the rainfall in your area

Not providing for overflow when the barrel gets full or when it’s raining heavily

Allowing debris to build up in the barrel and inside the hose after each growing season
