Shotshell Performance in the .44 Magnum
It’s often nice to have a shotgun available when the possibility of putting a grouse or cottontail over the campfire materializes, or when a nasty rattler appears unexpectedly. A shotgun is my choice for these situations, but one isn’t always available or appropriate. A great alternative is CCI’S .44-caliber shotshell. Even though they pale when compared to a shotgun’s performance, they can be quite effective nonetheless. Since a handgun doesn’t have choke constriction, you must be quite close to your target to be effective. The CCI .44 shotshells can be used in either .44 Special- or .44 Magnum-chambered firearms, and they contain about 170 pieces of #9 shot. You can also purchase the empty shotshell capsules from Speer and use them in your own handloads. The advantage is that you’re able to load whatever shot size you believe will be most effective in each situation.
