49ers won’t wear ’94 uniforms in Miami

- By Jon Becker

Despite a push by Richard Sherman to wear throwback uniforms in Super Bowl LIV, the 49ers will go with their traditional look when they take on the Chiefs in Miami on Feb. 2.

As the designated visiting team, the 49ers will wear their usual road garb consisting of white jerseys and gold pants, the team said Monday morning. NBC Sports Bay Area first reported the team’s uniform plans.

Sherman told The Athletic following the 49ers’ 37-20 rout of the Packers in the NFC Championship Sunday he and some teammates were pushing to convince the NFL to allow them to wear their allwhite 1994 throwback uniforms in the Super Bowl. There were no indications whether the 49ers’ request to wear the alternate uniforms was denied or even formally submitted.

San Francisco wore the allwhite throwback uniforms in its Week 17 win in Seattle that clinched the NFC West title and the conference’s top seed.

49ers fans who may be into omens, the team has twice worn the white jersey/gold pant combination during Super Bowls — and San Francisco has won both. The 49ers beat the Bengals 20-16 in Super Bowl XVI in Michigan while in white jerseys, and they also wore white jerseys and gold pants while ripping the Broncos in New Orleans 20 years ago, 5510 in Super Bowl XXIV.

In addition, the 49ers are

hoping there’s still some magic left in their traditional white jerseys and gold pants since the last time they wore them — in New Orleans, when San Francisco came away with an epic 48-46 win on Dec. 8.

Looking back at their past Super Sunday attire, the 49ers have worn red jerseys in four of their six Super Bowl appearances, including their only loss on Super Bowl Sunday, a 3431 Ravens’ victory in New Orleans nearly seven years ago.

As the “home team,” the Chiefs will be wearing their traditional red jerseys and white pants combination. Kansas City, which will be making its third Super Bowl appearance, wore red jerseys while beating the Vikings 50 years ago in Super Bowl IV, the team’s only Super Bowl victory.
