Virl Greir, 76, was living in Veteran’s Center Housing while battling disease, succumbed to injuries at hospital.

MARINA >> A man in a wheelchair was hit by a car near a busy intersection Tuesday evening in Marina and later died from his injuries. The accident caused commuter traffic to be rerouted while police investigated.

At about 5:30 p.m. the Marina Police Department was dispatched to a report of a vehicle injury accident on Imjin Parkway at 3rd Avenue in Marina. Responding units found one vehicle had collided with Virl Greir, 76, of Marina, who was then transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

According to Kurt Schake, Veterans Transition Center executive director, the man was living in VTC housing but not as a program participant. He was suffering from an illness, getting treatment at a nearby facility and doing well. He was homeless, disabled and living with at the VTC temporarily “at our cost,” said Schake. Greir was being helped finding permanent housing.

Schake said the man was crossing Imjin Parkway near the Monterey Peninsula College Education Center at night when the accident occurred. He said Greir was taken to Natividad in Salinas. The police closed traffic at the intersection until about 11 p.m. Tuesday.

The Marina Police Department said that because the collision is under investigation.

Witnesses to the collision are asked to call the Marina Police Department at 831384-7575 or 831-884-1210.
