Run in the Name of Love canceled due to virus
June event in Carmel off due to coronavirus
The event, slated for June 21 in Carmel, will not be rescheduled and entrants will receive a full refund.
CARMEL >> The celebration of a decade long running event on the Monterey Peninsula will have to wait another year.
The Run in the Name of Love 2K and 5K road races, slated for June 21 in Carmel, has been canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic. The event will not be rescheduled and entrants will receive a full refund.
With the coronavirus spreading, the organization’s governance board and officials made a decision to cancel the race to ensure the safety of participants, volunteers, spectators and residents.
“It is with great disappointment that we have been forced to cancel this beautiful and meaningful event,” said Susan Love, race director for the event, in a press release. “Run in the Name of Love has been a source of joy to many and has offered a time of reflection and comfort to others.”
A nonprofit event by the Big Sur Marathon Foundation, the race was established 10 years ago to create health and benefit the community.
Grants have been provided to local groups, who volunteer at the foundations throughout the year and charitable programs, including the Just Run Youth Fitness program.
Earlier this month, the 35th annual Big Sur Marathon, which is traditionally held the last Sunday in April, was rescheduled for later this summer or early in the fall.
The world renown marathon event also includes a 21-mile run, an 11-mile run, a 12K and 5K and marathon relay. The Bythe Bay 3K, which has been held the day before the marathon for kids, has been canceled.
