California Rodeo Salinas postponed
SALINAS >> Officials with the California Rodeo Salinas have announced that this year’s 111th annual event is being postponed from mid- summer to early fall because of the ongoing surge in COVID-19 cases in Monterey County.
“The current COVID-19 situation in Monterey County and the Central Coast and new guidance from state and local governments have led us to believe that postponing our rodeo is the right thing to do at this time,” said rodeo President Dave Pedrazzi.
T he 2021 California Ro - deo Salinas has been moved to Sept. 23 through Sept. 26. T he Professional Bull R iding event is planned for Sept. 22. The rodeo was originally scheduled for July 15 through July 18.
The decision was made to postpone the rodeo following a recommendation from the rodeo’s COV ID - 19 Re - sponse Committee, officials said. The response committee meets regularly to review new information regarding the virus and the pandemic.
T he 2020 edition of the California Rodeo Salinas was first moved from July to October due to the pandemic before officials canceled the event in August citing COVID-19 restrictions. Tickets for the event had not gone on sale before the cancellation.
Details about tickets and other information for the 2021 event will be provided as soon as final decisions are made. The response Committee will continue to evaluate other events that the California Rodeo Association hosts.
The California Rodeo Salinas is one of the top 10 rodeos in the U. S. for professional rodeo contestants as well as an economic driver for local communities, creating over $11 million in economic impact in the course of one week, rodeo officials said. This includes donations to local nonprofits who work during the events to earn money for their programs.
