Salinas Mountain Bike team wins title

-

With the aid of a pair of individual champions, the Salinas High Mountain bike team won the conference season team championship in Division I.

Competing against other elite high school mountain biking teams in Clear Lake, the Cowboys held off Berkeley and El Cerrito to earn a trip to the Northern California championships.

Nathan Agan and his younger brother Seth Agan were champions in their respective divisions for Salinas, which is among the top mountain biking teams in Northern California.

The older Agan used a sprint finish to win the varsity event and capture the season championship, while Seth was steady over a challenging 6-mile course to produce another podium finish.

Kiera Ramiez was the runner-up in the senior girl's division, while Julia Hershberger and Harper Walker Lee finished second and third in their respective divisions.

Burlison leads NYU golf team

Joey Burlison has put together a solid final season for the New York University men's golf team, finishing second overall at the Farmingdale State Spring Invitational in New York.

The Palma product carded an even-par 70 on the first day, and a 73 over the final 18 holes to help NYU to its third team tournament title this season.

In seven matches this spring, Burlison, who will take part in the Liberty League Championships, has two runner-up finishes and five top 10 finishes.

As a sophomore in 2020, Burlison recorded four top 10 finishes before the pandemic shut down the spring, earning Division III PING honorable mention All-American honors.

Burlison shares the school record for the lowest single-round score (67), the best 36-hole score (135), and has the best single-season scoring average in school history.

Burlison, whose junior season was whipped out because of the pandemic, will graduate this month.

The fall saw seven different Salinas High athletes from five sports earn college scholarships. The spring has added six more on the Cowboys' campus.

Headlining the list is two-time Monterey Herald All-County basketball player Jenika Zurita, who committed to College of Idaho.

A four-year starter, Zurita led the Cowboys in scoring this past year at just under 24 points a game, helping them to the postseason.

Cole Sjoblom is taking his water polo talents to Fresno Pacific. Last fall the sniper earned allleague honors with 40 goals and 21 steals.

Max Hippensteel has been a bright spot this spring for the Cowboys baseball team, committing to UC Davis.

Two more softball players will be extending their careers in college after Iris Bejarano signed with Holy Names University and Ally Forbell committed to the University of Redlands.

In addition, Genesis Guereque committed after her final home game to play lacrosse next season at George Fox University.
