Dual Diagnosis means alcohol and substance abuse addiction recovery is combined with behavioral health treatment.

New Start Recovery Solutions Monterey Historic Pacific Grove Location

The Queen Anne residence at 468 Pine Avenue in Pacific Grove was designed by architect William H. Weeks. It was built in 1902 on land with a scenic view of the Monterey Bay. According to Pacific Grove city records, a Cleveland banker, J.J. Osborn, acquired the property in 1901. Mr. Osborn made it into a showplace on the Monterey Peninsula and resided there until the 1930s.

The 2021-2022 renovations and restoration have preserved the unique and historic architecture of the house – while modernizing the interior to accommodate expanded treatment programs and services.

The 18-Month Historic Home Major Renovation

When New Start acquired the property at

468 Pine Ave in Pacific Grove – they anticipated a 6-month renovation. However, it quickly changed from “Let’s open ASAP” to ‘Let’s do everything possible to restore and preserve this amazing historic building!”

After 18 months of intensive renovation, the entire building has been restored and upgraded. Like all renovations – it took a lot longer than expected, but it was totally worth it. In its historic location, the upgrades and expanded New Start Recovery Solutions Monterey is a beautiful addition to the Monterey community.

New Start Recovery

Solutions treatment centers help patients renovate, renew and restore their lives. They maintain a high standard of care for those experiencing and suffering from substance abuse, drug addiction, and alcoholism.

They believe that addiction is a complex but treatable disease – and that a ‘universal’ addiction treatment program is not appropriate for everyone. Each client receives a complete evaluation, biopsychosocial assessment, and individualized treatment plan.

The full continuum of care includes:

Medical Detox

Residential Rehab Outpatient IOP and PHP Medication-Assisted Treatment MAT

Telehealth Virtual IOP Outpatient Primary Mental Health Care

Family Programs

Alumni Programs and Support.

Care for clients begins with biopsychosocial screening and assessment. Other elements of whole-person treatment include holistic practices such as mindfulness relapse prevention, nutrition, yoga, and meditation. At New Start Recovery Solutions, mindfulness training and relapse prevention are integral parts of our dual diagnosis and evidence-based substance abuse treatment programs. Mindfulness in everyday life means creating an internal space and calmness that allows quiet awareness of thoughts - without judgment. Relapse triggers can then be recognized and discarded. Habitual behaviors can be recognized without feeling the compulsion to act on them. Long-term addiction recovery is dependent on discarding habitual substance abuse activities –

and engaging in new sober activities.

Mindfulness has many benefits for patients recovering from addictions, PTSD, anxiety, and other behavioral health issues.

Wellness Lifestyle for Long-Term Sobriety

New Start Recovery Solutions uses a whole-person approach to healing addiction recovery. This includes mindfulness training. The goal is to assist patients in creating lifelong sustainable sobriety. Patients are guided to create healthy habits, nutrition, rituals, and a wellness lifestyle for mind, body and spirit.

Got Stress? Self-Medicating with Alcohol or Drugs Makes it Worse

Self-medicating with alcohol or drugs only makes stressful situations worse (sometimes, far worse). And if self-medicating goes on long enough – individuals can become functional alcoholics. Functional Alcoholics or Addicts are masters of deception. Friends, co-workers, and extended family usually see ‘just an average person.’ But in private, alcoholic behavior patterns are fully active. High-functioning alcoholics and addicts live in denial and point to their career successes.

These individuals do not fit the popular stereotype of ‘down and out.’ However, the health effects of consuming large daily amounts of alcohol or drugs will catch up with the individual – sooner or later.

Relapse Prevention Tips

It is important to remember: With a relapse prevention plan – you don’t have to relapse to work it. In relapse prevention, the main things New Start is trying to identify are high-risk situations and how to manage them. We all have “self-talk” in our head - and it can lead to positive or negative thinking. In a relapse situation, negative self-talk can lead to unwanted and negative actions and relapse. A relapse prevention plan will help build critical thinking and avoidance strategies – so you can stay focused on achievable goals without activating stressors.

Relapse Prevention Daily Check-in

Remember, you can’t think your way out of problems that you behaved your way into.

• Desire – What are my intentions for the day? What do I plan to get out of this day?

• Urge – Am I craving my substance of choice? Is my schedule today manageable enough to keep my stress level low? Do I plan on doing anything that would sabotage my recovery or the goals in my treatment plan?

• Feelings and Emotions – Check in with yourself about how you are feeling emotionally. If your sponsor is not available to talk with, find someone you trust so you can process and understand the feelings and emotions you are having that day. It is important in relapse prevention to write your feelings on a piece of paper, in a journal or on your computer. Writing down feelings will give you time to think; and also help with the processing of feelings. Processing and understanding feelings might be hard at first. However, you will begin to feel better when starting to identify exactly what it is you are experiencing emotionally on a daily basis.

• Action – How am I taking positive action in your relapse prevention plan? How am I building a better quality of life for yourself so that I can move forward in a positive direction?

• Think – Always think about how you react to the choices and actions of your daily life. Journaling will help you identify strategies to build a positive outcome and how to avoid triggers that once held you back in life. Remember, you can’t think your way out of problems that you behaved your way into. You must look at your behaviors and understand the way they play out in your new life of recovery. Rediscovering sobriety with wellness is a joyful experience! A new start in life is just a short step away at New Start Recovery Solutions Monterey.
