Local contingent to run the Boston Marathon

- By John Devine jdevine@montereyherald.com

Headlined by Pacific Grove's Kenneth Warde and 81-year-old Hansi Rigney, 25 runners from Monterey County have qualified and will compete in this year's 127th running of the Boston Marathon, slated for April 17.

The 73-year-old Warde will be taking part in his 41st Boston Marathon, and 31st straight, where he's already in the exclusive quarter-century club for consecutive races in the illustrious event.

Rigney, a Carmel resident, is a running marvel and one of a handful of female runners over 80 that will run the world-renowned 26-mile, 385-yard course.

While Rigney is the oldest competitor from the county competing, former Notre Dame distance ace Nina Anderson of Salinas is the youngest at 29, having earned a qualifying mark in Sacramento.

Taking part in the 30-over division will include Sean Bowen, Abinazer Aghegnehu, DJ Singh, Hyon Kee Higgins, Erardo Rodriguez, Rodrigo Zanin, David Sadowski, Mallory Mueller and Jonathan Argyle.

Racing in the 40-over division will be Lauren Collins, Thelma Piew-Hearne, Ben Balester and Chandra Babcock.

Ruben Magana qualified in the 50-over division, along with Seung Lee, Anthony Stonehouse, Shane Buzza, Robert Royce and Jeffery Morton. Rounding out the list of ageless qualifiers is Mark Bradley, Beverly Zalan and Peter Krasa.

Another honor for Carmel equestrian

Sara Tuck added another honor to her growing list of achievements this spring for the Fresno State equestrian team, earning All-Big 12 conference honors in the flat.

The Carmel graduate is just the fourth athlete ever from Fresno State to be named to the All-Big 12 flat team in the program's longrunning history.

Tuck won both of her flat-point competitions at the Big 12 Championships in Stillwater, Oklahoma. She captured six straight flatpoint events and hasn't suffered a loss that dates back to Nov. 18.

She led the team with four Most Outstanding Player honors this past spring for the nationally ranked Bulldogs, earning Big 12

Flat Rider of the Month honors in February.

Tuck set school and program record scores prior to the Big 12 Conference championships, moving into the Top 10 all-time at Fresno State.

The redshirt junior earned Most Outstanding Performer honors in three competitions during the conference season. While Tuck will graduate in May, she has been invited to return for a final season, which will enable her to pursue her master's degree.

Clements sizzling for Cal Poly

Coming off a record-setting season as a freshman, Jessica Clements leads the Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo softball team in five different offensive categories this spring.

A former Santa Catalina slugger and member of The Herald's All-County softball team, Clements is hitting a team-high .345, with 28 hits, 15 runs scored, seven doubles and a .458 on-base percentage.

The outfielder is second in walks (10), runs batted in (13), homers (1) and steals (4) for the Mustangs while sporting a .958 fielding percentage.

The 5-foot-8 redshirt sophomore was the Big West Freshman of the Year last season and a finalist for the NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year honor.

Clements led the conference in hitting last spring at .396, finishing with 63 hits, while scoring 36 runs, hitting safely in 36 of the team's 48 games.
