MARINA >> Work continues on the Imjin Parkway Widening and Roundabout Project with no anticipated night work in the next two weeks, according to the city of Marina's public works division.

The city of Marina is the lead agency on the project, a planned two-year effort to widen and increase safety on an important artery linking the Salinas area to the Monterey Peninsula through Marina.

From now until April 12, during the day, crews will continue to complete tree and brush removal on the westbound side of Imjin Parkway toward Monterey, as well as the installation of silt fence at the project's limits, according to Michaelle Mowery, city of Marina public works division spokesperson. During this time, the demolition of the existing roadway section on westbound Imjin Parkway lanes behind a concrete barrier will begin.

At Preston Drive, grading, earthwork, excavation and installation of sanitary sewer pipe will continue to completion.

Excavations for the sound wall and retaining wall will begin. Crews will also continue the installation of permanent fencing for the mitigation site, and begin grinding and removal of existing pavement behind a concrete barrier. Anticipated impacts from this work include increased truck traffic to transport pavement grindings.

Night work is not anticipated during this time.

The project will affect 1.7 miles of roadway and will include the construction of four roundabouts, increasing the stretch of roadway to four lanes, and is the second regional Measure X project to be built. The first was the Monterey-Salinas Transit maintenance facility in King City.

Measure X was the November 2016 ballot measure that was approved by 67.7% of Monterey County voters for the Transportation Agency's Transportation Safety and Investment Plan. The Transportation Agency for Monterey County and the city of Marina remind motorists that the enforceable speed limit through the construction zone is 25 mph and that traffic control is there for the safety of everyone involved.

Future construction activity of the Imjin Parkway Widening and Roundabout Project includes building the retaining walls and sound walls at Preston Drive and Abrams Drive.

Preston Drive at Imjin Parkway will be closed through August. Last week, striping, signage, the installation of concrete barriers and temporary signals, and pothole paving on Imjin Parkway was completed by the contractor.

Tree and brush removal work continued on the westbound side of Imjin Parkway, and the installation of a perimeter silt fence at the project's construction limits continued on the westbound side, as well as the installation of permanent fencing required to limit access and protect habitat areas in the mitigation site.

Once completed, the Imjin Parkway Widening and Roundabout Project will provide transit and pedestrian improvements, add on-street buffered bike lanes, stormwater treatment areas, retaining walls and a sound wall.

The improvements will benefit commuters who travel through the corridor, as well as those who live along Imjin Parkway at CSU Monterey Bay and the neighboring homes in Marina Heights, Sea Haven and Preston Park.

The project's $40.5 million in funding sources include $2 million from Marina generated from development impact fees, $18.25 million from Transportation Agency for Monterey County's Measure X and $20.25 million from California's SB1 local partnership program.
