Replacement equipment for police approved
MHC basketball team highlighted
The Monterey City Council had a shorter session on Tuesday, getting through the agenda in less than 90 minutes. The quorum was also a smaller one as well, with Vice Mayor Kim Barber and Council member Ed Smith absent.
The council voted to approve replacement equipment for the Monterey Police Department, following the annual military equipment usage report. The police requested purchases for 13 semi-automatic patrol rifles to replace the 13 they have, which are over 24 years old. This would come out of the department's budget. They will also be seeking a Crisis Negotiating Team Command vehicle to use with the Monterey Peninsula Regional Special Response Unit through a grant.
See Monterey talked about how the city's investments in the organization are supporting county-wide marketing promotions for small businesses. The summary provided more details about See Monterey's spending, what it is used for and how it helps others in the community.
The Monterey High School Basketball Team was highlighted for their 2024 CIF Division IV State Championship, a first for the team. The state championship title is the first in Monterey High School history, the first in Monterey County history to be won by a public school basketball team, and the second ever in Monterey County overall.
“We've had great support, and it's never a one man job, it's a group effort,” head coach Greg Daniels said.
The council also passed the consent agenda without comment, namely moving forward to the next steps with ordinance changes like at Old Fisherman's Wharf and generator usage in Monterey.
