The Mt. Pleasant area continues to have the fastest-growing outbreak of COVID-19, according to a New York Times dashboard. That growth is based on the week-to-week increase in new cases and weighted by population.

As of Thursday morning, the Mt. Pleasant area continued to have the ninth worst overall COVID-19 outbreak in the nation, according to the New York Times.

There are two things different about this outbreak than previous ones. It is being driven by cases among youth — including younger kids — and much of it appears to involve a variant of the SARS-COV-2 virus.

That strain, called B.1.1.7, is believed to have originated in the United Kingdom. It is more

transmissible than the older strain, and some early evidence points to that it might also cause more serious disease.

Cases increased in the 20-49 age group across the six counties of the Central Michigan District Health Department by 377, according the health department’s latest data and statistics sheet.
