Assmann joins city commission
Businessman replaces former mayor Will Joseph
A businessman and member of the Mt. Pleasant Zoning Board of Appeals has been appointed to the city commission.
Brian Assmann, a native Mt. Pleasant residen whose family owns flooring store Assmann's Inc. on Mission Street, was one of 10 applicants to fill the commission vacancy left by former mayor
Will Joseph, who departed last month to become city manager in Paw Paw.
In discussing the applicants, Commissioner Mary Alsager said all were good and that a few rose to the top with their experience in problem solving, volunteering, business knowledge and the ability to work in collaboration with others.
Assmann, who is a project manager at the flooring store, is a Mt. Pleasant High School graduate
Assman, who is a graduate of Central Michigan University currently working on his master's degree in business, said he is excited about the appointment and plans to run for a full term when the city holds a special election in May.
A member of the local Lions Club, Assmann is a longtime member of the Mt. Pleasant Zoning Board of Appeals and said his experience in his family's long-standing business will be an asset to the commission.
He is experienced in building construction, architecture, land
scape architecture and real estate development.
Because he was born and raised in Mt. Pleasant, Assmann said, the community is very important to him and he wants to contribute to its success.
Assmann was picked from four finalists, which also included Kristin Batzner, Taylor Idema and James Kridler.
Rounding out the 10 applicants were Braedon Chapman, Bryan Chapman Jim Holton (threetime mayor who offered to fill in until the seat is up for election), Ross Howell, Terry Kunst and Christopher Alton-lee Mcglamery.
