Anthony Feig excited for 2022 House run

-

Now that new legislative maps have been approved, Mount Pleasant resident Anthony Feig is enthusiastically looking forward to campaigning for the new State House District 92, which includes Isabella County and portions of Gratiot County.

Feig, 52, is a geologist and professor of Geography and Environmental Studies at Central Michigan University. At CMU, his research focuses on science education policy and training tomorrow’s science teachers. He also served as president of the CMU Faculty Association union, in which he remains an active member.

Feig has been married to his wife, Cathy Willermet, for almost 22 years. They have two sons who attend high school in Mount Pleasant.

The new 92nd District is considered to be highly competitive going into 2022. The prior 99th District contained outlying parts of Midland County, and did not include Gratiot County. The seat is being vacated by Roger Hauck, who is term-limited.

Feig is excited about the new district and the coming year, saying: “What’s really going to make this a dynamic race is that for the first time in many years, voters will have the chance to make a meaningful, hardcore comparison between candidates, rather than basically saying, ‘Oh, that’s the person who’s going to win no matter what.’ I think this election here in the new 92nd is going to end up being less about the two parties, and more about which person voters actually like most. It’s going to be about who will best represent the citizens of this region.”

“The voters are going to seriously grill us candidates, and not let us off the hook—that’s how it’s supposed to work. I know I’ve got to bring my game, and I’m looking forward to that. In January I’m hitting the ground running; I’ve got a lot of folks to meet,” Feig said.

Feig believes that supporting small businesses in the area is a top priority: “Folks need good-paying jobs, and it’s crucial for businesses to be able to pay workers while growing and making a good profit.”

“Education is a key part of that,” Feig said. “Our schools need to be properly supported and funded for the benefit of our workforce—and our community.”

Feig also wants to help local farmers adapt to climate change. “Less predictable weather means less certainty and security for the people who grow our food,” he says. “We owe farmers our support and respect.”

The general election will take place Nov. 8, 2022.
