BENSON, ALICE M.

Alice Marie (Ensign) Benson, 87, of Alma, died January 5, 2022, at Masonic Pathways in Alma. She was born on January 28, 1934, in Ypsilanti, Michigan, the daughter of Elbert Edwin and Esther Mary (Crawford) Ensign. She married Clyde G. Benson on December 22, 1956, in Ypsilanti, MI. Mrs. Benson graduated from Ypsilanti High School, attended Eastern Michigan University, Michigan State University and received a B.A. in Business Administration from Central Michigan University. Mrs. Benson volunteered at the Gratiot Schools Federal Credit Union, precursor to Graco Federal Credit Union, in the late 60s, then accepted a paid position as Assistant Treasurer in May of 1970. In January of 1971 she was promoted to manager and served in this role until her retirement in February 1988. Under her leadership the Credit Union grew from 341 members with $146,000 on deposit to 2,363 members with over $2.4 million on deposit. In her pastime she was an avid reader and enjoyed solving crossword puzzles. She is survived by her son Tim (Joan) Benson of Crystal; grandson Tyler (Kristy) Benson; greatgranddaughters Olivia, Annie and Charlotte, greatgrandson Parker; grandson Joshua (Bronwyn) Benson; great-grandson Galen. Her son Stuart (Susan) Benson of Howard City. Her son Andy (Kathy) Benson of Alma; granddaughter Heidi (Nate) Williams; great-granddaughter Chelsea Wise (Caleb Silorey); great-great-granddaughter Scarlet and great-greatgrandson Grayson; great-grandson Brandon (Jessica) Wise; great-great-granddaughter Ella Rose great-great-grandson Jackson; granddaughter, Jill (Matt) Moreno; great-granddaughter Mia, greatgrandson Nolan; granddaughter Melissa Awsung; great-grandson Jason. Her daughter, Mary (John) May of Stanwood; grandson John Clyde. She is preceded in death by her husband Clyde, a brother Thomas, and her parents. Memorial services will be held on January 12, 2022, at 11:00 a.m., at the Masonic Pathways, Doig Chapel. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at the chapel. Interment will be held at a later date in Riverside Cemetery in Alma, Michigan. Those desiring, may make memorial donations in Alice’s memory to the American Cancer Society.
