A man taken into protective custody last week by Mt. Pleasant police officers was arrested Sunday for threatening a woman with a knife.

Officers arrested the man at approximately 7 p.m. Sunday in an alley near the parking lot of the now-closed Family Video, 317 N. Mission St., after responding to calls that he threatened a woman with a knife near a dumpster on Chippewa Street.

He was carrying two large knives on him.

The woman told officers the man approached her while she was checking out items outside of the dumpster and that he chased her as she drove off, calling her a “n **** r” and hitting her the back of her car with a knife, according to a police report about the incident.

When police asked him about it, he told them that the passenger in her car owed him money and he was trying to collect. During the conversation, the officer reported that the man said a number of things that appeared to be detached from reality, including that he was a Green Beret and, “If you’re not doing your jobs, I’ll do patrol.”

He also told officers that the man he said was a passenger in the woman’s car was “out to get him.”

The officer noted in his report that the police have had repeated contact with the man over the last year and that he appears to have severe mental health issues and that he also possibly uses meth.

Officers had in fact taken the man into protective custody last week, and the man told police that he was released after three days.

The man was arrested without incident and is currently lodged at the Isabella County Jail.
