(FINALLY) GETTING OUTDOORS AGAIN
Sunny weather boosts outdoor organization’s first event
Nice weather has been a bit of an uncommon commodity this spring, but Friday was just about perfect for a walk in the park.
That just so happens to have been what the inaugural event was for an organization dedicated to providing people with disabilities an opportunity to get outside.
Limitless Outdoors, an organization founded by Latherio Agoff, teamed up with Mid-michigan Industries to provide some of MMI’S people a chance to talk a nature walk in Mt. Pleasant’s Chipp-a-waters Park.
Agoff, who is wheelchair-bound, has championed
the idea of providing people with disabilities with access to outdoor activities since he rigged a gun mount and shot his first duck with a .22 rifle at 13.
He conceptualized the organization at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and finally fit all the pieces together so that this year he could start doing outings.
“The mission is to help empower people,” he said. “Meet them where they’re at.”
Friday’s walk started at the Chipp-a-waters pavilion and went down the riverwalk near the park’s eastern border, before taking their first break at the Chippewa River overlook.
After a short break in the sun, they got up and walked to the next overlook at a bend in the river. Then they walked back towards the parking lot, where they planned to have a snack.
Agoff said it might be his organization’s first event, but he’s got other stuff lined up this summer including a canoe trip at Buckley’s, a turkey hunt and fishing.
