Mt. Pleasant has slimmed its number of voting precincts from seven to five and dropped two non-elementary school voting locations as a result. The changes take place effective for the Aug. 2 primary election.

Voters will no longer go to either city hall or the high school to cast in-person ballots, although the counting of absentee ballots will take place at city hall, according to a press release from the city.

“A decrease in the City of Mt. Pleasant’s population count over the past ten years has prompted a reduction in voting precincts from seven to five,” the press release said.

“This action will significantly reduce the cost of elections, assist with election worker recruitment and streamline precinct logistics.”

One precinct has a polling location outside its boundary. Voters in Precinct 4, which would have included most of the voters who previously voted at the high school, will have to go to Fancher Elementary, 801 S. Kinney Ave., to vote in person. Many of the voters who previously voted at city hall at the old Precinct 2 will cast in-person ballots at Kinney Elementary, 720 N. Kinney Ave. City hall, where the city clerk’s office is located, is still where absentee ballots will get tabulated.

The other precincts and balloting locations are as follows:

Precinct 1: Ganiard Elementary, 101 S. Adams St.; Precinct 3: Pullen Elementary, 251 S. Brown St.; and, Precinct 5: Vowles Elementary, 1560 S. Watson St.

The city plans to mail new voter cards in late May or early June, the press release said. Voters who cast in-person ballots should go to the location on their new cards.
