FIELDS, KATHLEEN MARY (HAMMOND)

Kathleen Fields, 68, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Sunday, May 8, 2022, with her daughters by her side. She was born April 14, 1954, in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, daughter of the late Robert Virgil and Esther Ruth (O’sullivan) Hammond. She graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1972 and earned her bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University. Kathleen was proud to be an alumnus of both schools. She retired from Isabella County where she spent 17 years as the Drug Court Coordinato­r. Prior to that, she was employed as a student advocate for 12 years with the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe. Most important to Kathleen were her children and grandchild­ren. She was extremely proud of her family. Her priority in life was being where her children and grandchild­ren were, she attended most sporting events, concerts, and school functions. No matter the time of day or what was going on, Kathleen gave of herself. She had this innate sense of understand­ing, as needed, for all. Kathleen loved to talk to everyone. It was guaranteed that being out with mom would mean an encounter with a stranger making a connection with her. She had this incredible depth and vastness that was infinite this incredible depth and vastness that was reminds us that each moment counts, and every moment should count. Each one of us has been tremendous­ly impacted by her and now we must carry on her love, and understand­ing so her legacy continues. There are some people who come into this world with a compassion and fortitude that means so much. She truly cared about people, their families, and knew what to say to encourage others to believe in themselves and not let their current situation define them. As expected and true to her character, Kathleen valiantly fought Glioblasto­ma for over three years. She continued to fight for her three children, their spouses, and her six grandchild­ren. If you knew Kathleen, you were very wellversed that her children and grandchild­ren were her everything. Kathleen leaves behind her three children and their spouses, Sari and Robert Mellendorf of Pigeon, Kaiti and Jason Piotrowski of Hudsonvill­e, and Josh and Ashley Fields of Whitmore Lake; six grandchild­ren, Megan and Madison Mellendorf, Olivia and Connor Fields, and Ella and Luke Piotrowski; sister, Carol (Harold) Kelly of Traverse City; sister in-law, Sharon Hammond; niece, Lori Koenig; and nephew, Kristopher Kelly.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Terry Hammond; and niece, Lisa Hammond. Kathleen’s memorial service will be held at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home at 11 AM, Friday, May 13, at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home with Father Loren Kalinowski officiatin­g. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Immediatel­y following, a luncheon will be served in Lincoln Reception Center (attached to the funeral home). Kathleen’s ashes will be laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant. Memorial contributi­ons may be made to William and Janet Strickler Society or American Cancer Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
