A year to remember for Sacred Heart Academy sports

The 2021-22 school year has been an exceptional school year at Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart Academy, especially for the varsity girls sports.

On Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. the Sacred Heart Academy softball team plays in the Division 4 semifinal round against Ottawa Lake Whiteford from the campus of Michigan State University.

The Lady Irish (28-11) are competing in the semifinal round for the third time in program history (1994, 2012) and come into the semifinal hot, winners of 13 of their last 14 games.

Moreover, upon a quick perusal of what the Lady Irish have done over the last school year one stands astonished at all the achievements.

Just last fall the SHA girls cross country team placed fifth at the MHSAA Division 4 state finals, a solid showing by one of the better programs in the state. The girls golf team also won a regional title and placed 13th in the D4 state finals.

A couple weeks after that the Sacred Heart volleyball team put together its best postseason run in program history as it advanced to the D4 semifinal round in Battle Creek for the first time in program history, finishing the campaign at 35-6-4.

Earlier this spring the SHA girls basketball won a thirdstraight district title and advanced to regionals before bowing out to top-ranked Fowler. Damon Brown and company went 17-4 for the season.

Then, a couple weeks ago, the defending D4 state champion SHA girls track team finished runner-up at the D4 MHSAA state finals, some four points shy of winning back-to-back state titles.

Not a bad school year, eh? Considering all the aforementioned it’s quick remarkable that a high school with only 110 students can have so much success in athletics, yet it’s true.

Going into Friday’s semifinal the unranked Irish will have their hands full as Ottawa Lake Whiteford is ranked second in D4 and has nearly 40 wins on the season. Yet, keep in mind, the Irish have been playing great in recent weeks and have upset numerous ranked teams, including seventh-ranked Portland St. Pats.

Stay tuned.
