Evelyn M. (Cole) Humm, age 85 of St. Louis, passed away Saturday afternoon, February 11, 2023, at Mymichigan Medical Center Alma, surrounded by her family. She was born at home in Emerson Twp. on December 26, 1937, to the late George Evart and Anna Marie (Vojtas) Cole. She graduated from the St. Louis High School in 1955 at the age of 16. Then went on to get her teaching degree in 1959 from Central Michigan University. While teaching at the Leonard Elementary School in Grand Rapids, MI., she decided to further her education by attending the University of Michigan. Where she earned her master’s degree of Education in 1960. After marrying the love of her life, Vance L. Humm on Aug. 11, 1963, at the Alma College Chapel. She moved back into the area and taught at Hemlock schools for 6 yrs. In 1969, she moved to Ithaca Public Schools for a Title I Reading Specialist position at South Elementary. She stayed in that position for the next 31 years, retiring in 2000. While teaching, Evelyn also served the community by working on three local boards: Gratiot County Planning Commission, Gratiot County Mental Health Board and the Gratiot County Parks and Recreation Board. And the Gratiot County Democratic Chairperson for some years. In her free time, she liked to travel with her family. Her first love though was fishing, a sport introduced to her by her father. Over the years Evelyn and her family made many fishing trips to Rice Lake and St. Joseph Island in Ontario, Canada. After retiring from Ithaca Public Schools, she pursued another dream she had for many years. Renovating an old, abandoned house that sat on their farm, south of Ithaca, along US-127. So starting in the spring of 2000, Evelyn and her family began the renovation project and in November of that year, House on the Hill Treasures opened as an antique Store. She operated the store for almost 20 years, closing on December 31, 2019. One of the things she enjoyed the most about running the store was meeting and talking with travelers from all over the state and the nation, that walked thru the door.
