Alma College quarterback Carter St. John started a non-profit to raise money for cancer charities. Scots QB St. John dives forward to start unique charity that unites D3 athletes in cancer fight
Alma College sophomore quarterback Carter St. John is using the skills he’s best at to make a difference in the lives of others.
St. John this year launched QBS vs. Cancer, a nonprofit organization that brings together Division III athletes to raise money for charity.
“I got the idea for it following the Alma CARES game, which is an event the football team puts on to benefit cancer charities. I have seen people in my life suffer from cancer, but I did not realize until then how many of my teammates this affected as well,” St. John, originally from Zionsville, Ind., said. “I felt like I had to do my part to give back.”
Through the QBS vs. Cancer organization, St. John explained, middle- and high-school quarterbacks can pay to participate in training sessions with DIII quarterbacks. Most sessions cost $25, run for one hour and include a wide range of drills needed for quarterbacks to hone their skills. All of the money raised will be donated to a cancer charity of the DIII quarterback’s choosing.
There are more than 240 DIII football programs in the United States, and St. John said that he contacted the starting quarterbacks of every program to assess their interest in participating. At the time of this writing, there are 30 quarterbacks from colleges and universities all over the country, including Indiana, New Jersey, Ohio, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania,
Connecticut and other states signed up to take part. St. John said he expects more to join when word of the program begins to spread.
