COLEMAN’S KLOPF GETS TO 300 WINS

- By Jim Lahde jlahde@medianewsgroup.com

Chad Klopf is a coach’s coach, the very epitome of it.

For the past decade and a half Klopf has been a constant at Coleman High School, coaching here and helping out there all while providing leadership and mentorship to the youngsters coming through.

In the fall Klopf is the head coach of the Coleman varsity football team.

In the winter he’s always around the gym helping the basketball programs in some capacity, usually keeping the book or helping at the scorer’s table or assisting on the bench.

Then, every spring, he coaches the powerhouse program that is Coleman softball.

In short one Chad Klopf is a year-round coaching constant out Coleman way and the Comets are better off for it because he genuinely cares about his student-athletes as evidenced by his willingness to coach year round for well over a decade.

On Tuesday afternoon Klopf recorded his 300th career coaching victory as head softball coach via a 7-1 home-opening victory over Breckenridge. Coleman then won game two 12-9 to even its overall record at 2-2 on the season.

“I would have like to have gotten it last year in regionals, but it’s nice to get it,” said Klopf following Tuesday’s game one win. “Right now we’re playing good defense and pitching well and hopefully we’re going to start to get more aggressive at the plate.”

On paper the Comets have big-time potential this season too, which has been the norm dating back decades.

With nearly the entirety of last year’s team returning the Comets are a senior-led team that wants to win this season. The Comets went 21-15 last season.

Senior right-handed pitcher Madison Miller leads the way as she’s earned Division 4 Allstate honors two years running.

Moreover, shortstop Nevaeh Chaffee is also a returning Allstater as is third sacker Ellery Johnson and outfielder Ava Gross.

As a collective the Comets could be a powerhouse in Division 4 this year.

Within the conference confines the Comets could give defending

champion Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart a run for its money this spring too and considering these two play each another in a district opener, well one of the better teams in D4 will be bounced early.

In Tuesday’s game one victory, Miller got the win in the circle as she allowed one unearned run on three hits while striking out eight in six innings.

Johnson went the final frame to seal it.

Ava Gross had two hits and scored three runs in the opener while Chaffee scored three runs and drove in two.

Chaffee had three hits and three runs scored in the nightcap while Miller had two hits.

The Comets will travel to Farwell for a doubleheader Thursday.
