Reader poetry from inside the big house
I will never forget my first time on a bike. It was with this biker babysitter I liked. Tattoos on her arms, a beautiful face, long flowing hair and a Coke bottle shape. On a hot sunny day she pulled in the drive, and told me “hop on we’re taking a ride.” I mounted the chopper, held on to her tight, as we sped off I smiled in delight. I enjoyed every curve on her and the road, I was so excited I thought I would explode. Thirty years later, the highway’s my home. I broke laws, broke hearts, speed limits, and bones. And at the roar of my engine, I still get a rush, ’Cause the love of my life all began with a crush. I have a big beard, the tattoos, my leather, and a reason why my bikes are always named Heather. —Timothy J. Mooney
