SPACE-SAVER INSERTS

Mustang Monthly - - RESTOROUNDUP -

Ihave a Boss 429 trunk detailing question. What was the original finish on the inserts that are used on the trunk floor to mount the space-saver tire and inflator bottle? Also, what was the finish on the mounting bolts? Did the bolts have any identification marks? Thanks! John McKay Athens, Georgia

The original finish on the inserts is clear cadmium. The finish on the bolts was bare steel on the “A” logo bolts and phosphate and oil on the “M”-marked bolts. These were the most common bolts I’ve seen used. The inserts were installed after the Unibody was painted. Often restorers miss this detail.
