Tate Costa earns All-American honors for Illinois BULLETIN

Tate Costa is a national champion and earned All-American honors in two events for the Illinois men’s gymnastics team at the NCAA Championsh­ip in Columbus, OH.

The sophomore from Narraganse­tt and a Narraganse­tt High graduate, captured the high bar title with a 13.900 score. He also earned All-America in the all-around with a career-best score of 81.997.

Costa, named a team captain for next season, is the first Fightin Illini gymnast to finish first in the high bar since 2015 and the first multiple All-American since 2019. He competed in the high bar at the NCAA tourney as a freshman. In April, he earned All-Big Ten Conference first team after helping Illinois capture its first regular-season Big Ten title. The team finished fifth in the NCAA Tournament.’

As a high school senior in 2022, Costa competed in the Junior Elite Nationals, finishing fourth in the high bar, sixth on floor exercise and ninth in all-around.

Chloe Greene (South Kingstown)

The junior was named The Most Valuable Athlete on May 8 after she helped the Charlestow­n Southern women’s track team finish second in the Big South Conference Championsh­ip May 6-8 in High Point, N.C. The led the meet with 29 points. The South Kingstown High graduate finished second in the long jump (19 feet, 8 inches), third in the high jump (5 feet, 3 inches) and fourth in the javelin throw (138 feet, 3 inches), the 100-meter hurdles (13.95) and the 400-meter hurdles (1:02.17). The long jump, triple jump and 100 hurdle efforts are personal records. Greene had a PR in the javelin throw when she finished first (152 feet) at the college’s Last Chance Meet last Sunday in Charlestow­n, S.C.

Hannah Hawley (Coventry)

The catcher/third baseman wrapped up a standout sophomore season with the Michigan State softball team, the Spartans finishing 21-30 overall and 7-16 in the Big Ten Conference. The Coventry High graduate started 50 games and led the team in hitting with a .349 average. She had 52 hits in 149 at-bats with a team-high 12 doubles, 12 home runs, 25 runs batted in with a team-high 31 runs scored. Her homers were second best on the team. In the field, she made just five errors in 206 attempts (.966).

Zac Zyons (South Kingstown)

The sophomore infielder is hitting .381 for the Bryant baseball team which stands 32-17 overall and 16-5 in the America East Conference to earn the top seed in the conference tournament starting next Saturday. The South Kingstown High graduate, who bats left-handed, has 53 hits in 139 at-bats with 11 doubles, a triple, seven home runs, 43 runs scored and 30 runs batted in. In the field, Zyons has five errors on 157 chances (.968) and has been involved in 18 double plays.

Kate Powers (Hope Valley)

The redshirt junior righthande­r is the No. 2 starter on the Albany (N.Y.) softball team, the Great Danes 33-12 heading into the first round of the Division I NCAA Tournament and will face Texas A&M today in College Station, Texas. The Chariho Regional graduate is 9-3 with a save in 19 games and 14 starts. She has a 2.29 earned run average and has nine complete games and four shutouts. In 91.2 innings, Powers has given up 52 hits and 33 runs, 30 earned, with 41 walks and 48 strikeouts.

Nick Martin (East Greenwich)

The Rhode Island freshman captured the 5,000-meter race at the New England Championsh­ip last weekend in Worcester, Mass. The East Greenwich High graduate’s time was 14:38.13. At the Atlantic-10 Conference meet May 3-4, he finished fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplecha­se (9:11.32). Senior Versavia Goretoy (West Warwick High) won the 100-meter hurdles for the women. She posted a 13.72 time at the New England meet and a personal record time of 13.70 at the Atlantic 10 meet.

Matt Reilly (North Kingstown)

The 6-foot-3, 205-pound senior midfielder was named to the Liberty League first team after a solid season with the Clarkson (N.Y.) men’s lacrosse team. The North Kingstown High graduate led the 8-9 Golden Knights in scoring with 60 points on 35 goals and 15 assists with three game winners. He was third on the team in ground balls with 34. Reilly earned his first first-team selection. He was a second team pick as a sophomore and an honorable mention last season.

Owen Georgio (East Greenwich)

The freshman long stick midfielder and defender was named to the North Atlantic Conference first team after a standout first season with the Husson (Maine) men’s lacrosse team, the Eagles finishing 6-10 overall and 3-5 in conference play. The La Salle Academy graduate led the team in ground balls with 100 and caused turnovers with 53. The latter ranks sixth in Division III. Georgio also did a good job on the offensive end, scoring nine goals with 12 assists for 21 points.

Nick DiSalvo (Narraganse­tt)

The 6-foot-5, 215-pound junior defender was named to the Commonweal­th Coast Conference second team for his play with the Endicott (Mass.) men’s lacrosse team, the 17th-ranked Gulls finishing 16-2 after dropping a 14-9 decision to No. 9 Swarthmore in the second round of the Division III Tournament last Saturday in Salisbury, Md. The Smithtown West High (N.Y.) graduate had 27 ground balls and 27 caused turnovers on the season. He had just four turnovers in 17 games and 15 starts.

Madison Lupino (Coventry)

The sophomore finished second in the hammer throw for the Assumption (Mass.) women’s track team at the Northeast-10 Conference Championsh­ip May 3-4 in New Haven, Conn. She had a heave of 152 feet, 7 inches). The Coventry High graduate finished 11th in the hammer at the New England Championsh­ip last weekend in Worcester, Mass. with a toss of 146 feet, 7 inches. She was the third sophomore in the event which drew a field of 24 throwers.
